James (Jaime) Martiney '85 P14 earned his BA in Biology from Princeton and PhD in Experimental Pathology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Jaime has 30+ years of experience teaching STEM-related graduate-level, upper-level and intro-level courses for science, pre-health career, and non-science majors. Jaime served for fourteen years in the United States Navy Reserves, Medical Service Corps, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander, where he trained to strategically prepare and respond to biological warfare events, global pandemics and disaster preparedness. He was activated to Active Duty in 2003 and became a veteran during the Iraqi Freedom operations.

 His military training and duties included:

• Fleet Biological Warfare Agent Detection for Navy Environmental and Preventative Medicine Personnel – Biological Defense Research Directorate, USAMRIID
• Medical Management of Chemical and Biologic Warfare Injuries – US Navy
• CBRNE (Chemical Biological RadioNuclearExplosive event Wargame Exercises – Several, US Navy

He currently serves on the board of Association of Latino Princeton Alumni (ALPA) and regularly attends as many PA3 events as he can, including the book club.

Breakthroughs in Crafting ‘The Boat That Flies’”

While the math & science of hydrofoils have been well-understood for more than a century --- the early 2000s, brought game-changing breakthroughs in materials design and dynamical control systems that caught up with the math & science --- removing limits and altering America’s Cup racing forever!  Our two sailor-engineer speakers’ deep involvement with the sport and the team, position them well to discuss these transformations, along with:  the advent of foiling in sailing; similarities and distinctions between flight and foiling; surface-piercing vs. fully-submerged foils; various sailing classes, e.g., Moths & Nacra 17; and foiling stabilization & the evolution of computational control mechanisms.  There will be ample time for Q & A, with priority given to viewer questions submitted in advance to:  propellers@princetonaaa.org.

Thinking, Fast and Slow, by Professor Daniel Kahneman

The PA3 book club (usually) meets on the last Thursday evening of each month (except July, August & December) at 7:00 p.m., in East Pyne or Frist under normal circumstances and via Zoom until it's safe to meet in person again. Selections alternate, with occasional exceptions, between fiction and non-fiction, and the authors or books typically have a Princeton connection. Book club meetings are open to all PA3 members and their spouses/partners.

We welcome as our honored guests Xiyue Wang GS and his wife Hua Qu.  Tom Swift '76, PA3's President, will lead a fireside chat with Xiyue and Hua to discuss Xiyue's three-year imprisonment in Iran and the current regime there.  Questions will be taken but only if submitted in advance via email.

We will also be electing directors.  The event kicks off at 6:30 for casual get togethers; business begins at 7:00 and the Fireside Chat will begin around 7:20.  Breakout rooms will be provided at the end of the meeting.

In view of the unusual circumstances this year, we have arranged with Princeton-based Olsson’s on Palmer Square for a Grazing Box with an orange and black theme for PA3 members who may want hors d'ouevres for the meeting. A special Princeton-themed cookie is also available separately.  Please make individual arrangements directly with Olssons no later than October 26 at this link.
