First Friday Lunch - May 2017
Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents. On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests will meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton. As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton University PhD candidate will present his/her work to the group in this informal setting. Topics vary monthly and are always interesting! Have a look at our impressive roster of previous luncheons. On Friday, May 5th, 2017, we will be joined Alexander Kustov, PhD candidate in the Politics Department and at the Woodrow Wilson School. Alex will present his talk "Why do - and don't - compassionate voters support immigration? The altruists' dilemma of helping others and favoring compatriots." Despite being harmful to the poor, immigration restrictions are popular in rich democracies. This opposition is puzzling if one considers the importance of altruistic motivations in political behavior. Why do otherwise prosocial voters resist immigration which can be made to benefit everyone? Departing from the original observational and experimental US data, Alex demonstrates that - depending on whether they view their compatriots as more deserving than foreigners - highly altruistic people can either be the most or the least anti-immigrant group.
As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.
Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay PA3's annual dues),
lunch includes three courses, a complementary soft drink and coffee/tea.
Enhanced Lunch option adds a glass of wine or beer (purchase below now or 'upgrade' at lunch).

First Friday Lunch - April 2017
Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents. On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests will meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton. As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton University PhD candidate will present his/her work to the group in this informal setting. Topics vary monthly and are always interesting! Have a look at our impressive roster of previous luncheons. On Friday, April 7th, 2017, we will be joined Pawel Przytycki, a PhD candidate in Computer Science. Pawel will discuss his work on differential
analysis between germline variation and somatic mutation. The decreasing cost
of sequencing human genomes has allowed for thousands of both healthy
individuals and tumor samples to be sequenced. With this massive increase in
data it is possible to observe the minute differences between the genomes of
healthy individuals (germline variation) and also how tumor samples accumulate
mutations over the course of a person's life (somatic mutation). Pawel's
research has found that a large amount of germline variation in a gene can be
indicative of that gene's ability to accumulate somatic mutations without
detrimental health effects. This in turn will help us better understand which
genes play important roles in the development and growth of cancers.
As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.
Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay PA3's annual dues), lunch includes three courses, a complementary soft drink and coffee/tea. [**Wine/beer offered a la carte**]
