First Friday Lunch with Jim Steichen, PhD Candidate in Music
On Friday, March 1st, 2013, PA3 welcomed Jim Steichen to the monthly First Friday luncheon at the Nassau Club. Jim is working on his dissertation which focuses on George Balanchine (at left).
Who knew that Princeton makes an appearance in a Balanchine work?! Those who attended lunch now know about Alma Mater,a ballet inspired by Edward Warburg's witty satire of an Ivy League football game, set at the Yale Bowl.
Above and below, respectively, are early and later productions of Balanchine's Serenade, set to the music of Tschaikovsky.
As usual, there was a lively discussion while enjoying the Nassau Club's buffet luncheon. Thank you Jim for joining us to talk about your work!

FIRST FRIDAY LUNCH AT THE NASSAU CLUB - APRIL 5th, 2013
Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents. On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon buffet at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton. As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton PhD candidate presents his/her work to the group in this informal setting. Topics vary monthly and are always interesting!
This month, we will be joined by Jason McSheene, a PhD candidate in the Molecular Biology Department. Jason's work focuses on developmental biology. His research focuses on the mechanisms by which embryos are able to generate the break in left-right symmetry and convert it into biochemical messages that influence heart morphogenesis.
Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay PA3's annual dues), lunch includes the Nassau Club’s full buffet as well as a complementary beverage (wine, beer, soft drink). Pre-registration is required.

FIRST FRIDAY LUNCH AT THE NASSAU CLUB
On December 7th, 2012, PA3 was pleased to host Jamol Pender, a 5th year graduate student in Operations Research and Financial Engineering within the Engineering School. Jamol is researching queueing theory inspired by problems in communications centers. While his thesis focuses on queues, he has interests in applied probability, energy, healthcare, mathematical finance and mathematical biology.
Jamol told us a bit about his path to Princeton and how he got into Operations Research. Then he gave the group an overview of his research at Princeton. As usual at PA3's First Friday lunches, a lively discussion followed the formal presentation.

On Friday, January 11th, 2013, PA3 welcomed Nadezhda Savova to the monthly First Friday luncheon at the Nassau Club. Nadezhda recently received her PhD in the Department of Anthropology.

Nadezhda told the group about The Bread Houses Network, which she initiated while was conducting her PhD research in the Department of
Anthropology at Princeton. While studying the social role of community
cultural centers networks in Brazil, Cuba, and Bulgaria, Nadezhda started to connect these
networks and help them develop exchanges and projects. In 2008 while working for
UNESCO’s Culture Sector in Paris she founded the International Council for Cultural
Centers (I3C), www.international3c.org, which is a global network of community cultural
centers, already connecting 56 national networks with thousands of centers, scattered from
rich urban places to some of the most marginalized neighborhoods of the world, proving that
