PA3 Book Club Meeting

All:

We had a bit of a tie for the book selection this month, so I'm casting my vote for The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer. Meg Wolitzer, a professor in the Creative Writing MFA program at Stony Brook Southampton, was a guest artist at the Princeton Atelier in the Lewis Center in 2014 and participated in a reading at the Lewis Center earlier this year. Bonus - Nora Ephron turned one of her books ("This is My Life") into a movie!

Excerpt from the NY Times book review:
“The Interestings” is warm, all-American and acutely perceptive about the feelings and motivations of its characters, male and female, young and old, gay and straight; but it’s also stealthily, unassumingly and undeniably a novel of ideas. Wolitzer has been writing excellent fiction for 30 years, and it has always been this astute. From the start, her subject has been the practical, emotional and sexual fallout of women’s liberation, particularly as it affects mothers and children. But here she has written a novel that speaks as directly to men as to women. With this book, she has surpassed herself.

Princeton Internships in Civic Service (PICS)

Established by the Princeton University Class of 1969 in the belief that community service is essential to the welfare of society and inspired by the rich tradition of Princeton and Princetonians “in the Nation’s Service and in the Service of All Nations.” PICS has become a multi class organization that provides the opportunity for students to explore potential careers in public service and the non-profit sector. Princeton students bring their creativity, skills, and energy to their sponsoring non-profit organizations, producing effective, meaningful work on significant projects of value to the organizations. The internships encompass a wide range of endeavors in national and international organizations, working in group advocacy, legal services, public policy, the environment, health and social services, community development, education, and the arts. Since we began in 1996, we have placed over 600 interns with 172 organizations.

September Book Club Meeting

Thursday, Sept 24, 7PM
Wilson by A. Scott Berg

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to discussing September's book (Wilson by A. Scott Berg). The book is packed full of interesting Princeton history and has been very enjoyable for me.

I have an exciting announcement regarding the September meeting - we will be joined by the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author, A. Scott Berg '71 himself! Mr. Berg is the author of other highly acclaimed books such asGoldwyn (1989), Lindberg (1998), and Kate Remembered (2003), so it will be a real honor to have him join us. Many thanks to Pat O'Connell, who reached out to Scott.

The meeting will now take place on Thursday, September 24th at 7pm, not the 22nd, as originally suggested. Please be sure to take note of the change of date.

Location: East Pyne 111

I am excited to kick off our meetings with such a highly acclaimed author. Please do your best to try and join us - as were our meetings with Ian Caldwell '98 (The Fifth Gospel and The Rule of Four) and Professor Chang-Rae Lee (The Surrendered), I'm sure this will prove an unforgettable experience.

All the best,
Linsay
