First Friday Lunch - February 2017
Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents. On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests will meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton. As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton University PhD candidate will present his/her work to the group in this informal setting. Topics vary monthly and are always interesting! Have a look at our impressive roster of previous luncheons.
On Friday, February 3rd, 2017, we will be joined once again by Andrew Ledford, PhD candidate in Sociology. Andrew has met with us in the past to discuss his work in Iran and we look forward to hearing about his progress. Political Islam, a topic that touches many current news headlines regarding ISIS, Iran and the Middle East, continues to grow with the region's appetite for more religion in the state. The research presented will discuss the conditions that have historically yielded this phenomenon over the course of the last 100 years.
As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.

On Friday, January 6th, 2017, we will be joined by Shilpa N. Kobren, a PhD candidate in the Computer Science department, working in the field of computational biology under Prof. Mona Singh. Shilpa's thesis focuses on the automatic detection of binding pockets and binding preferences in proteins. This work can begin to explain the substantial clinical and phenotypic heterogeneity observed across patients wtih the same type of cancer and even the same implicated gene(s).
As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.

On Friday, December 2nd, 2016, we will be joined by Michael A. Hepler, PhD candidate in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Michael is also a teaching assistant in the Keller Center's Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS). Mike became a PhD student in the MAE Department in 2013, after graduating in physics and astrophysics from the
University of Minnesota. He joined The Program on Science and Global Security (SGS) in 2016 and is working on technical aspects of nuclear arms
control verification including physical zero-knowledge protocols and the “buddy
tag” project in support of verifying numerical limits on treaty-accountable
items. Prior to joining SGS, Mike worked at Princeton’s Electric
Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics Laboratory and continues to maintain an interest
in the policy and technical implications of nuclear space reactors for use in
future missions to Mars and the outer solar system. As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.

On Friday, November 4th, we will be joined by Adam J. Lerner, 5th year graduate student in the Philosophy Department and recipient of the prestigious Porter Ogden Jacobus Fellowship for 2016-2017. Adam will discuss his doctoral dissertation entitled "Empathy, Moral Epistemology, and Moral Progress." He moonlights as a member of the Princeton Social Neuroscience Lab. As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion! Please join us.

Every year, PA3 welcomes the incoming freshmen and incoming graduate students from the local area with a dual event: an ice cream social for the freshmen and a beer&pizza social for the grad students. We request alumni and current students to attend, as well, to answer questions and generally give a rousing welcome to these shiny, new tigers. If you stick around for the dual event, you will get a backwards dinner (dessert first) and have great fun - we promise! Please RSVP.
PARENTS OF INCOMING FRESHMEN
PA3 also warmly welcomes the parents. We want to celebrate with you on your child's success. As you drop your student off on 8/24 for the social event, please come to the parents' event next door. You will be meeting other PA3 parents and asking them about the exciting journey ahead at Princeton. There will be snack provided.
