“Electrochemical Energy Storage: Towards Planetary Decarbonization & Profitable Sustainability"
Speaker: Donald R Sadoway, Professor of Materials Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Shifting away from fossil fuels to carbon-free electricity has never been more urgent. The clock is ticking on climate change mitigation; massive materials shortages loom on the horizon; and despite an abundance of clean power from solar and wind, we currently lack the means to manage their fluctuations. To surmount these challenges, efficient, safe, flexible, cost-effective, grid-level energy storage will need to be developed. Our speaker, who invented the liquid metal battery, will describe electrochemical innovations that will be needed to make this energy transition. He’ll then explore deeper issues that pervade the invention process; what to do and not to do; and how he goes about “inventing the inventors.”
