Spring Photo Walk at Duke Farm

Spring photowalk at Duke Farms (Sunday April 24, rain date: May 1) with Dave DeFreese '91.

Post-walk note from Dave:
"We had about 20 people show up for the photo walk. I made a little mistake in not taking any group photos. Otherwise, the group enjoyed the tour, we had perfect weather and for the people who had never been here before, I think they got a good overview of the Duke family history, the layout of the estate and some ideas for potential future visits. If there’s any interest in the future, I’ll gladly do it again as time allows."
10AM to noon or 12:30.
Please plan to arrive at 9:30 so that we can kick off from the Orientation Center on time at 10.
We end at the Great Falls when they start to flow at noon.

Bring a camera (cell phone, point and shoot or DSLR) and we’ll have a nice excursion.
Here is the link to the walk we did a couple of years ago:

Duke Farms was a working farm with a large portion of the grounds set aside for James Duke’s estate (which was ultimately never built).  When Doris Duke was alive, she built up a couple of greenhouses and a sculpture collection around the grounds.  What’s left today is a mix of ruins, working greenhouses, and semi-natural landscaping laid out by the Olmstead firm which also did the design for NYC’s Central Park and the Columbian World’s Fair in Chicago.  There are dozens of trails for walking and biking just a couple of miles away from the heavily congested area surrounding the Somerville Circle.

April Book Club

By popular vote, our April book will be "The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality" by Angus Deaton.
Deaton is the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School and the Economics Department, and winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Economics.
In Brief:
•    The world is a better place than it used to be. People are healthier, wealthier, and live longer. Yet the escapes from destitution by so many has left gaping inequalities between people and nations. In The Great Escape, Angus Deaton--one of the foremost experts on economic development and on poverty--tells the remarkable story of how, beginning 250 years ago, some parts of the world experienced sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the stage for today's disproportionately unequal world. Deaton takes an in-depth look at the historical and ongoing patterns behind the health and wealth of nations, and addresses what needs to be done to help those left behind. A4P Community Service Event - March 26

Community House Big Sibs
  • Come join us for a community service event!  We will be helping the Community House Big Sibs program on Saturday, March 26th from 11-2pm.  This group works with elementary school students. The program is trying to introduce them to service as well, and our group will be helping them complete a service project.  Specifically we may be putting together hygiene packs for families in need.  The age range of the children are 2nd-5th grade.  This event is limited to twenty volunteers due to space/event constraints.
  • Community House's student-driven education programs "work with families to close the achievement gap in Princeton by offering support in the areas of academic success and social-emotional literacy for underrepresented area youth.  The Big Sibs program is a "student-led mentorship project connecting University students with elementary school students in Princeton Public Schools.  Mentors build long-term relationships with individual students and help foster academic and social and emotional growth."
  • Please contact Joyce Chen Shueh at joyce@chenshueh.com or (609) 902-5999 by March 18 if you can join us
