The author will join the discussion.

The PA3 book club meets on the last Thursday evening of each month (except July, August & December) from 7-8:30, usually in East Pyne or Frist. Selections alternate (with occasional exceptions) between fiction and non-fiction, and the authors or books typically have a Princeton connection.

ABACUS: small enough to jail tells the incredible saga of the Chinese immigrant Sung family, owners of Abacus Federal Savings of Chinatown, New York. Accused of mortgage fraud by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., Abacus becomes the only U.S. bank to face criminal charges in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. The indictment and subsequent trial forces the Sung family to defend themselves – and their bank’s legacy in the Chinatown community – over the course of a five-year legal battle."

Chanterelle Sung '00 plays herself in this Oscar nominated documentary.  She and her sisters Jill and Vera will visit Princeton and after the movie, serve on a Q&A panel moderated by Professor Beth Lew-Williams and Joyce Chen Shueh '96. Of the four Sung sisters, three were trained as lawyers, the fourth a physician — including Jill Sung, the bank’s chief executive, and Vera Sung, a director of the bank — and Chanterelle ‘00 who ironically once worked in the district attorney’s office that prosecuted the case.

This winter, Oliver Crane '22, a graduate of the Peddie School, used his gap year to break a world record: At 19, Crane became the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Join PA3 the evening of April 4 to hear Oliver tell his tale, a journey that began in the Canary Islands and ended 44 days, 16 hours and 9 minutes later in Antigua. 

As this article from PAW, notes, Oliver's high-tech 23-foot vessel included solar panels, navigation equipment, a water purifier, and a radio. But the obstacles on the 2,700-mile trip were, predictably, enormous. Come hear how tough things got and how Oliver found his way through a litany of deterrents and snags, from a sleeping cabin that leaked to six capsizes. 

Oliver Crane's adventure raised more than $60,000 for Oceana, an international advocacy organization focused on ocean conservation. He also raised money for HomeFront, a local charity that helps the homeless.

“Technical Innovations in Data Driven Medicine: 

Cross Validating Methods In Disease Detection, Diagnosis & Treatment”

Smart phones and other wearable sensors, increasingly embedded in everyday life, have spurred rapid accumulation of our daily life data.  While machine learning algorithms, derived from this data, have yet to make a major impact on medical decision making, they do hold promise and are increasingly used in studies of:  cardiovascular disease, falls, measuring rehabilitation outcomes in stroke and amputees, monitoring Parkinson’s disease symptoms and detecting depression.  But how reliable are these algorithms and how should they be evaluated?  Dr. Kording will discuss these new data sources; emerging methods to gauge their reliability; and the awesome possibilities they empower for human health.

Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents.  On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests will meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton.  As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton University PhD candidate will present his/her work to the group in this informal setting.  Topics vary monthly and are always interesting!  Have a look at our impressive roster of previous luncheons. 

Eda Yetim, Princeton University graduate student who is completing the M.Arch II program at Princeton University's School of Architecture, will join PA3 on Friday June 8, 2018.  She received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University in 2015.  She is a member of the Women in Design and Architecture collective at Princeton.  Her Masters thesis focuses on spatialized ornaments into three dimensional landscapes in order to create new interactions within bodies in a community.  Yetim is from Istanbul, Turkey. 

Please join us.  As always, there is sure to be a lively discussion!
