“Electrochemical Energy Storage: Towards Planetary Decarbonization & Profitable Sustainability"
Speaker: Donald R Sadoway, Professor of Materials Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Shifting away from fossil fuels to carbon-free electricity has never been more urgent. The clock is ticking on climate change mitigation; massive materials shortages loom on the horizon; and despite an abundance of clean power from solar and wind, we currently lack the means to manage their fluctuations. To surmount these challenges, efficient, safe, flexible, cost-effective, grid-level energy storage will need to be developed. Our speaker, who invented the liquid metal battery, will describe electrochemical innovations that will be needed to make this energy transition. He’ll then explore deeper issues that pervade the invention process; what to do and not to do; and how he goes about “inventing the inventors.”
Join us for a discussion, including Q&A, of Putin's war in Ukraine, including a fascinating look at the diplomatic steps that led from the dissolution of the USSR to the current catastrophe in Ukraine. Ambassador Kinsman is one of Canada's most distinguished diplomats and is frequently asked by media for his assessment of foreign affairs.
He recently authored a paper on the origins of the war in Ukraine, which was published in Canada's Policy Magazine, for which he is principal foreign policy editor.
Biography
Jeremy Kinsman (Princeton ’63, Institut d'études politiques de Paris ’65) can fairly be called the dean of the Canadian diplomatic corps. During his career, he has served as the Canadian ambassador to the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Italy, Albania, and the European Union. He was also the Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
In 2007, Ambassador Kinsman was Diplomat-in-Residence at Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs. He has also been Regents' Lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and Distinguished Diplomatic Visitor at Ryerson University, Toronto. He has been a member of the Foreign Affairs Council of Premier Justin Trudeau.
Kinsman is a regular contributor to print media and TV, notably as lead foreign affairs writer for Policy Magazine.

“Stereotactic Radiosurgery: A Transformation in Managing Neurologic Disease --- From Operating Room to Outpatient Treatment”
Speaker: Navid Redjal, MD, Director, Neurosurgical Oncology Capital Institute for Neurosciences, Capital Health
Stereotactic radiosurgery, the ability to precisely target lesions with focused radiation beams, is advancing the treatment of neurologic disease. Complex lesions deep within the brain, which once required high-risk surgeries, can now be treated in a non-invasive manner and on an outpatient basis. This has been a boon to patients with: brain tumors; vascular lesions; the movement disorders of Parkinson’s Disease and essential tremor; and pain conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia --- resulting in vastly improved quality-of-life. While advances in computer processing and memory storage/retrieval speeds drove some of these breakthroughs, others came from progress in the fields of: neural networks and neuroanatomy; physics; radiology and robotics. Our speaker will describe these rapidly-evolving surgical approaches and their prospects for future use in treating myriad diseases, including psychiatric disorders.
We begin our wine tastings for 2022 virtually, with the hope that a face-to-face event becomes feasible later in the year. We look forward to participation by our "regulars," as well as those who are joining us for the first time. Salud!
