at an

Evening of Winetasting
Wednesday, March 20, 2019

in Vino Diversitas!

The global wine world has been homogenizing into a monotonous palette of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot.  These are great grapes, but Vineyards everywhere have literally been uprooting their local grapes, with their funky, foxy, unique taste and millennia of history just to make a wine that is indistinguishable from a wine from halfway around the planet.

Wednesday's wine tasting will focus on rediscovering wine that doesn't all taste like it's all produced by Gallo.  Wine that matches a broad spectrum of culinary delicacies.  Wine that doesn't all taste like it comes out of the same box or barrel. Wine that is fun, and pushes the extremes along all five senses, as well as the sense of humor.

        Schedule of Events

  • 7:00 - Registration, Mingling, Snacks
  • 7:30 - Brief Overview of the History of Winemaking,
presented by local Oenophile Sev Onyshkevych '83
  • 8:00 - Tasting of 'Indigineous' wines, guided by Sev

“Recent Developments in Photocatalysis for Air Pollution Abatement

And Self-Cleaning Exteriors:  Passive, Affordable, Green, Sustainable”

Photocatalysis, the initiation of a reaction by light, has long held promise for commercial applications across numerous environmental systems:  air purification, contaminant remediation, water disinfection, and biofilm inhibition. When harnessed to turn interior & exterior surfaces (windows, lighting fixtures, textiles, building materials, solar panels) into passive reactors capable of self-cleaning --- this technology improves air quality.  After a brief overview of key developments in the field, Andrew will discuss: the latest third-generation applications that employ nano titanium dioxide; methods to quantify their effectiveness; and their positive impacts on human health.

Noah Mandell

Noah Mandell is a doctoral candidate in Plasma Physics at Princeton University.  Noah's thesis work is focused on turbulence and transport in fusion plasmas. Fusion is the energy that powers the stars, and it is the ultimate energy source of the future - both clean and unlimited. But so far, harnessing it has remained elusive. Turbulence is one of the main issues that makes it difficult to build an efficient fusion reactor.

Color Technology Options in NextGen Smart Phones & Devices:

A Case for MicroLED Displays”

Most of us spend hours each day, gazing at our gadgets – phones, pads & tablets, readers, computers, watches, VR headsets and AR glasses --- but when did you last consider actual aspects of the displays themselves, such as power consumption; image contrast, color quality and degradation issues that shorten device product life?  While OLED (organic light emitting diode)-based displays currently reign in these markets, inorganic microLED technology is poised to offer a smaller, flatter, less power-hungry alternative, once cost and manufacturing challenges are overcome. George Powch will describe this emerging technology and why it could change HOW we look at everything.
