An Evening of Winetasting

Join PA3 alumni

at an

Evening of Winetasting
Wednesday, March 20, 2019

in Vino Diversitas!

The global wine world has been homogenizing into a monotonous palette of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot.  These are great grapes, but Vineyards everywhere have literally been uprooting their local grapes, with their funky, foxy, unique taste and millennia of history just to make a wine that is indistinguishable from a wine from halfway around the planet.

Wednesday's wine tasting will focus on rediscovering wine that doesn't all taste like it's all produced by Gallo.  Wine that matches a broad spectrum of culinary delicacies.  Wine that doesn't all taste like it comes out of the same box or barrel. Wine that is fun, and pushes the extremes along all five senses, as well as the sense of humor.

        Schedule of Events

  • 7:30 - Brief Overview of the History of Winemaking,
presented by local Oenophile Sev Onyshkevych '83

“Recent Developments in Photocatalysis for Air Pollution Abatement

And Self-Cleaning Exteriors:  Passive, Affordable, Green, Sustainable”

Photocatalysis, the initiation of a reaction by light, has long held promise for commercial applications across numerous environmental systems:  air purification, contaminant remediation, water disinfection, and biofilm inhibition. When harnessed to turn interior & exterior surfaces (windows, lighting fixtures, textiles, building materials, solar panels) into passive reactors capable of self-cleaning --- this technology improves air quality.  After a brief overview of key developments in the field, Andrew will discuss: the latest third-generation applications that employ nano titanium dioxide; methods to quantify their effectiveness; and their positive impacts on human health.

Noah Mandell

Noah Mandell is a doctoral candidate in Plasma Physics at Princeton University.  Noah's thesis work is focused on turbulence and transport in fusion plasmas. Fusion is the energy that powers the stars, and it is the ultimate energy source of the future - both clean and unlimited. But so far, harnessing it has remained elusive. Turbulence is one of the main issues that makes it difficult to build an efficient fusion reactor.

PA3 Book Club: March 1, 2019

February 9, 2019 - The "February" book club meeting will take place on Friday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. This departure from our "last Thursdays" routine will make it possible for the author to join us for the discussion of her novel. We will meet in Lewis Library, room 117.

Self Portrait with Boy, by Rachel Lyon '05.

The PA3 book club meets on the last Thursday evening of each month (except July, August & December) from 7-8:30 at one of several locations on campus (East Pyne, Frist, Lewis Library). Selections alternate, with occasional exceptions, between fiction and non-fiction, and the authors or books typically have a Princeton connection. Book club meetings are open to all PA3 members and their spouses/partners, and no RSVP is needed.

A list of all books the club has discussed can be found at https://princetonaaa.org/bookclub.
